Denman Island’s Tai McGillivray is 15 years old and has been playing music and performing seriously since he was 7.  Although mandolin is his main instrument, he also plays guitar, fiddle and bass.  Tai has grown up attending and playing at many music festivals up and down the west coast including Northwest String Summit (Oregon) and Wintergrass (Seattle) over the years.  This has given him the wonderful opportunity to play and study with a lot of great musicians. His main teachers/influences have been Kevin Mitchell, Marc Atkinson and John Reischman. In 2016 Tai won a scholarship to study with Mike Marshall online for a year and performed with him the following year. For the past 2 years Tai has been an Assistant Teacher at the Wintergrass Youth Academy and has been asked to return again next year.  Tai also plays bass in his school’s R&B and Jazz bands as well as the senior concert band.  At the young age of 12, Tai released his first CD entitled “Wood Strings and a Pluck” and is now planning on getting back in the studio this coming fall/winter to record a CD of original material.

Nanaimo’s Quin Etheridge-Pedden is 16 years old and plans to pursue a career in music.   He began his musical journey at age 6 when he started Suzuki violin private lessons with Trish Horrocks as well as a beginner fiddle group at the Nanaimo Conservatory.  After one year of classical violin it was clear that Quin was destined to be a fiddler and he henceforth focused all his energy and education on fiddle music.  He has been taking lessons since then with Trish and Geoff Horrocks of Cross Canada Fiddle.   In 2017 Quin released his first solo CD, Embark.  It is an eclectic mix of traditional fiddle and new contemporary.  In 2017 Quin was nominated for a Canadian Folk Music Award for Embark, in the Young Artist of the Year category.  You can find him this summer at the Vancouver Island Folk Festival in Duncan and in Ottawa at the Canadian Grand Masters Fiddling Competition.  Most days you can find Quin in his music room with his fiddle, guitar, mandolin and loop pedal working on existing tunes or creating new ones for his second album.
